A New Face for Robin

I’ve seen a lot of comments on the forums about people being disappointed with the faces available in NWN2. After having spent some time trying to choose one for Robin, I’m starting to empathize with that sentiment. Remembering the limited selection of decent looking “heads” in NWN1 is helping me keep this in some perspective, but not entirely. One of the NWN2’s selling points is supposed to be its improved graphics, and the ability to support things like facial animations. So I was a little surprised that there weren’t more attractive head models currently available in the Electron toolset.

None of them fit Robin exactly. But I think I’ve finally narrowed it down to two choices, so I thought I’d post them and ask for reactions. The first one uses Aasimar head model #2, and the second one uses Half-Elf head model #5.

I’ll hold back mentioning my own thoughts and preference for now. But I get the impression of a somewhat different personality from each of these faces, and I was curious to know which one players preferred — and which one better fit their “mental image” of Robin.

  1. Not sure what gave Obsidian the misguided notion that portraits were a bad idea. And the character models aren´t even really that pretty if you think about it. Bloody hell, the NWN1 portrait really did scream "Robin" like you wouldn´t believe, and even though I don´t know her nearly as well as you do, I certainly do agree that no NWN2 face fits the girl that well. But number 2 comes close, I think. The sharper features certainly express her personality better.

  2. I like the first picture better for Robin, but I kind of pictured her with longer hair, either brown or red..with blue or green eyes.

When is the next installment comign out? I’ve been checking up on it ever since I played #1 last summer.

  3. Stefano, Michele, thanks for the comments! Here are a few of my thoughts.

In my image of her, Robin’s hair should be shoulder-length. That means a little longer than her character in NWN1 and the images above, but much shorter than in the “Sky-Drifter” portrait I used for her in the first chapter. The hairstyles above seem to be the closest match I can find in the NWN2 toolset. It’s golden blonde, with just a very slight hint of reddishness to it. Her eyes are a very deep blue, which I think the images above capture pretty well.

My own preference is for face #1, although Stefano is very observant in noticing that the sharper features of face #2 do capture some aspects of her personality better. Robin is a soul in conflict, and an ideal choice for her face would capture both halves of it. A warm, fun-loving free spirit at heart, that side of her is suppressed – but not completely – beneath a hard and ruthless fixation on vengence. Phaere’s “Sky-Drifter” portrait did a good job of suggesting this, depicting a warrior woman with just a hint of softness hidden underneath. That was the main reason why I thought it was such a good portrait for her.

Portrait #2 captures Robin’s “hardness” better than #1 does. But it strikes me as a very cold face, one without the underlying warmth that is at the core of who she really is – and I get a better feel for that warmth in portrait #1. So while a face that somehow managed to combine these elements would be ideal, given the choices available, I have to go with portrait #1.

  4. I think the first face looks better. Neither really look like she did in the Sanctum 1 but the first one is the best fit. That said I think we really need some better female heads for NWN2.

  5. I like the first as well. Bioware really messed with the half-elf heads making the noses really broad and I just don’t see Robin (female) as having a broad nose.

You might check it out again because the skin tones have changed since MOTB.

Of course the only robin I want to see is ‘guy’ robin… LOL.. Gal robin is hard for me to envision.

But in guy robins case… the only hal-elf head that is halfway decent (no pun intended is number 2. The Aasimar heads are awful.
