Game Modules

Part of the Sanctum of the Archmage saga was developed in the form of a pair of Computer-based Role-Playing Game (CRPG) modules for the Aurora Engine and toolset used by Neverwinter Nights. Earlier versions of these first two “module chapters” were available for download, and were inducted into the modules Hall of Fame at IGN’s (sadly now defunct) Neverwinter Nights Vault. (The top modules ranking has been preserved here; the Sanctum modules were listed at numbers 32 and 42, respectively.) With the disappearance of IGN’s NWN Vault, a new project page for the modules has been created here:

Sanctum of the Archmage: The Sight and The Quest on the “new” Neverwinter Vault

The part of the saga developed in game module form corresponds roughly to the third volume of the planned Sanctum of the Archmage novels saga: The Sight. In them, the player assumes the role of the protagonist of the saga, a mysterious figure known as “The Miracle Worker.” Gifted with a unique kind of foresight that may prove to be the only hope for defeating the Warlord, he becomes the close friend and ally of the deposed princess (or prince) of Carlissa, now the only surviving member of the royal family. And together, they struggle to turn a fragile rebel force into a powerful alliance that could free their kingdom from the ravages of the demon horde.

Current Development Notes

As of summer 2013, further work on the game modules was suspended until further notice.  This included completion of Chapter 3 and any work on Chapters 4-7, and it was done in order to make time to complete and begin publishing the Sanctum of the Archmage novels. The v4.2 remake of Chapters 1 and 2 was made available on the new Neverwinter Vault in September 2017. I stated then that I still had a strong interest in developing more of the story in RPG module form, and hoped that I would have the time and resources to return to it one day.

As of early 2018, and inspired by the release of Beamdog’s Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition, I’ve tentatively decided to resume work on Chapter 3 of the module series. Finding time to do this (along with my writing and day job) will be a challenge, and it will have to depend on the reception that re-release of the first two modules receives. But if there is sufficient interest, I would genuinely like to do everything I can to continue developing the series in game as well as in novel form. In the meantime a NWN:EE compatible version (5.0) of the first two modules was released on the Neverwinter Vault in June 2018, and I’m hoping to release a version of it on the Steam workshop sometime in 2020.

Future Development Plans

While I have ambitious plans to produce Sanctum of the Archmage as as a series of games as well as a series of novels, those plans have long had to remain secondary to my paying career and writing work. Here are my future module development aspirations, if I should one day find myself with the time and resources to pursue them. Together, the full game arc (completed and planned) would parallel, and tell roughly the same story as, volumes three through five of the planned novels (The Sight, The Miracle Worker, and The Alliance).
